Scenario #1: There is a conflict with a staff member in the classroom?
Stay professional and courteous when voicing disagreement; remember that they are a resident employee and likely have a better understanding of the school’s day-to-day operations
Scenario #2: I’m feeling stressed or overwhelmed?
Stay calm and communicate any issues in a non- confrontational way. Often, school staff are unaware of a
problem or its significance and will respond better if you ask for help, rather than demand it or complain.
Scenario #3: I have an unfriendly relationship with someone who works in the school?
If you are still comfortable working in the building, try to leave any conflict out the door and remember that you are there to help the school and the students and so are the other staff. Remember also that you can decide which schools you don’t work in if the problem is significantly impacting your comfort level.
Scenario #4: A staff member is rude to me or treats me poorly?
There is probably something going on that you are not aware of; they could be stressed or agitated – put it out of your mind and respond calmly and professionally. Remember that you are there to help and are a guest in the building; while substitute work is not exactly customer service, it’s still service, so put your best foot forward and rise above any negativity.
